URBAN YOUTH

WHAT IS THE NEED?

As a part of your time with Love Thy Neighborhood, spend 20-30 hours a week serving with Youth For Christ. Care for the community through building relationships with urban youth in the Shawnee neighborhood of West Louisville.

Louisville, Kentucky is one of the most segregated cities in the United States. West Louisville in particular is a community that has been plagued by the effects of segregation (lack of resources, under-performing schools, heavy violence, and drug usage). Many of the youth who come to Youth For Christ live and go to school in a war zone and are regularly exposed to gang violence, immense poverty, and the continued drug epidemic, all within a densely populated area.

SERVE URBAN YOUTH

The goal of Youth For Christ is to build authentic Christ-sharing relationships with the youth living in this specific urban area. Through this internship with Youth For Christ, you will have the opportunity to share your story with the youth, allowing them to share their stories with you, and connecting it all to God’s story.

As a part of your service, you will have regular opportunities to engage in the lives of youth coming from many difficult home situations. A day serving here might look like:

  • Having 1:1 conversations, building relationships, and sharing the gospel both in word and deed with the youth who attend
  • Simply having fun and playing games
  • Leading devotional time
  • Tutoring on a variety of subjects
  • Seeking to build up the youth who attend in a wholistic way. Topics discussed include Basic Health and Safety, Educational Success, Spiritual and Moral Literacy, Economic Literacy, and Civic Literacy.

At this particular site, they usually see 15-20 youth each day, depending on the time of year and programming. The facility includes open spaces for games, activities, and bible studies, as well as space for tutoring and teaching programs.
